Mom of 17 year old daughter, ready to graduate, now what do we do?

We have a 17 year old daughter who has been tested at various levels in school and what keeps coming up is "severe deficiency in working memory" and auditory processing disorder.  Schools of course won't diagnose so I went to our pedo. about it years ago and he just put her on ADD med.  Didn't help.  Grades still suffered, especially in math courses which were nightmares.  I would chalk it up to laziness or just not applying herself (yes, no question there has been some of that) but she forgets to do things constantly, even pleasurable things ie; call her friends back, return e-mails and texts, follow up on social events, etc.  I'm extremely concerned how she will succeed in college given that there is so much lecture time.  Yes, she has recorded classes in the past but again, there is always the reminder to listen to it.  She tries SO hard and just seems to get little results.  I'm tired of dealing with the supposed "great school system" we are in and while she was on in IEP for a while (getting extra time to take tests, a little speech therapy) they really pushed to dismiss her from services because she wasn't deemed bad enough, basically.  I've felt all along that there is SOMETHING that is being missed and I just cannot get anyone to listen and direct me.  I just found this group today, actually...I wish I would have found it a long time ago.  If any of you know anyone (audiologist, etc.) in Indianapolis, that might be able to evaluate her, please let me know.  Again, I've wasted a lot of time getting the run around so please only refer me to someone who is competent.  Thank you so much.

Re: Mom of 17 year old daughter, ready to graduate, now what do we do?

So sorry to hear your daughter has struggled so much. Memory problems are common with auditory processing disorder. Also, her appearance that she doesn't apply herself enough may be more a fatigue factor. They estimate kids with this disorder take two to three times the energy to focus and take in information. So their ability to stay attentive is severely taxed -- which is why it is often diagnosed as ADD.

There are things that can be done to help improve auditory processing disorder, but they do not work for every child. In the library on this site there are many articles about therapies and accommodations.

The National Coalition of Auditory Processing Disorders used to have a great directory of audiologists who specialized in screening for CAPD, but it looks like they took it down. I don't know of anybody in your area, but maybe somebody on this board does. You might try calling around to see if they have a regional assessment center. Here in California they call them regional centers. It's where kids go to be assessed for various issues. Calling them they might know of a good audiologist in the area.

Take care,
Bonnie

What state are you in rdh?  You might want to type in on a search engine your state and "audiologists processing disorder".  I'd love to help you research if you need it.  Is your daughter still on your health care coverage?  You may need to check with them and see what audiologists are in your "network" if appropriate.

*edit*  Found this online for Indianapolis, IN...

Thanks to both of you who responded.  I did see that listing for the audiologist but at first glance it doesn't appear that they accept our insurance.  She will still be covered under our plan since she will be a full-time student for a while (hopefully!).  I just get extremely frustrated at the entire situation and don't really have any one to talk to about this.  Parents, most friends, DH, just don't get it.  Daughter wants the help and I just want her to have whatever tools she needs to do the best she can.  It's all I've ever wanted for her...no one is looking for a straight A student here but I just want her to be a confident, capable, young lady.

You might want to call them and ask.  Can't hurt to ask about it!  Even if they don't take your insurance, maybe you can make a payment arrangement with them.  It would be best for her to be seen by people who know what they are doing than some nimrod that doesn't have APD experience.  The schoolwork is only going to get harder as they get older, they need the tools to deal with this ASAP so they can more easily cope.  Heaven knows it's not easy to be a kid these days!

Let us know how things go and if you still need help.
