APD recognition in the USA

Hi Bonnie

My late Friend Debbie Wood set up the NCAPD in 2000 / 2001 she also invited some APD professionals to help her on the technical side of things.
Unfortunately Debbie had a fatal car accident in 2003 and as you may have seen on Facebook the NCAPD web site seems to have completely disappeared now.
Debbie and I were first APD web site competitors there were 4 or5 parents with websites competing for hits lol. The sites are still part of the APD WebRing I would now appear that I am now the only active online parent left from that group lol.

Currently the starting place for any new USA based support group would be Facebook, and more specifically the (C)APD group , and the new USA APD page. I know some USA APD professionals who would be interested in providing some support and help in reviving NCAPD or a completely new USA APD support network.

Living in the UK I may be slightly out of date of APD progress in the USA. You will need to build a team of parents who are prepared to spent their own time doing research into different areas of information, and support. You can not do it all on your own, so willing volunteers are very important.

If you need any advice or help via the internet you can always contact me.

best wishes

Graeme

Re: APD recognition in the USA

Hi Bonnie

Me again

I have created a few link to some of the most useful information about APD which can be accessed via my Delicious Online Book marking account.
It may help if say both you and Diana and others set up accounts at Delicious first to create your own online bookmarks about APD, but also you can set up your own Delicious networks to share your new bookmarks, this will also let you access my bookmarks as well.

Here are my APD related bookmarks on Delicious
All of my APD bookmarks can be found at http://delicious.com/dolfrog/%28C%29APD
or http://tinyurl.com/yenjbzu
Research paper collections http://delicious.com/dolfrog/RPC+audt
All research papers http://delicious.com/dolfrog/audt
My Top 10 APD research papers http://delicious.com/dolfrog/RP1+audt (this will grow to my top 20 soon sorting out my dyslexia research papers first lol)

There are a few APD forums at Yahoo
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OldAPDs/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AuditoryProcessing/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/capdinvirginia/
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/USA_APD/
and the first APD forum i ever joined  is at
http://listserv.icors.org/SCRIPTS/WA-ICORS.EXE?A0=CAPD (which has gone a bit quiet in recent months)

I hope this helps

Re: APD recognition in the USA

Thanks for all the info, Graeme!! Unfortunately I'm currently engaged in a huge project with work, so I haven't had time to spend here. This project should finish up mid-December, and then I'll have more time to popularize this information.

It does seem like this is a journey that must begin with education, then figuring out how to get the attention of the lawmakers. Because our states have laws that vary, in the U.S. it might be easier if we approach this one state at a time. Sometimes if you can get a dozen states on board, then the Federal government will create a law that crosses the states, but not usually. It doesn't help that the health insurance companies do not recognize it as a condition. Getting APD recognized as a disibility will certainly be a process, but one that must be accomplished to help everybody who is currently challenged by it.

Anybody else interested in helping with this cause? We need many hands to get the word out.

Take care,
Bonnie
